Technology Depository Agency (TDA) delegation led by Head of Industry Development & Advisory Division (IDAD), En. Azhar Mohd Said paid a courtesy visit to the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) at Kem Sungai Besi on 28 August 2020.
The delegation consists of officers from IDAD and Programme Operation Division were welcomed by UPNM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), YBhg. Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Tengku Mohd Tengku Sembok, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Brig. Gen. Prof. Ir. Dr. Norazman Mohd Noor, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic & International Affairs), Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Ahmad Mujahid Ahmad Zaidi and Principal Fellow, Director Academic-Industry & International Programmes, Dato’ Akhtar Zainudin.
During the visit, TDA acknowledged the achievement of UPNM as a university that produced military and civilian graduates for national defense needs. The curriculum covers the field of defense and technology in the form of hands-on. UPNM is also actively involved in research and innovation activities that focus on defenses, weaponry, ICT and cyber, maritime and water security.
Some of the issues and challenges were discussed which includes a limited market in the domestic defense and security industry, lack of funds to undertake R&D activities in developing new technologies, commercialization of their products and also difficulties in penetrating global markets. Looking at the criticality of issues being highlighted and the potential of UPNM’s products and services that can bring high impact to the industry development, TDA reassured its commitment to provide support through the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) platform.
Among assistances that can be anticipated are on funding facilitation to commercialize UPNM’s R&D product, business matching, laboratory upgrading as well as using services and courses provided by UPNM with regards to human capital development in fulfilling the industry needs and demand.
